Role model

A role model is someone whose actions or achievements inspire others. Seeing successful sportspeople from a similar background can help a person imagine themselves participating. Female athletes and coaches can encourage girls, while role models from different racial, religious and cultural backgrounds can show that sporting opportunities are open to a wider range of people.

Lower visibility of women's sport can also mean fewer prominent female role models. These are social barriers, not evidence that women lack interest or sporting ability.
