Strong competition or hostility between opposing teams or their supporters.

Paper 2
Revise: Causes of hooliganismA rivalry is strong competition or hostility between opposing teams or their supporters. Fans may feel particularly passionate about a derby match, which is a match between local rival teams.
For a ‘state and explain’ question, name each reason and then link it to violent or damaging behaviour. Naming ‘rivalry’ alone does not explain how it causes hooliganism.
Keep rivalries and gang culture distinct: rivalry concerns competition between teams and supporters; gang culture involves group loyalty and defending a territory or ‘patch’.
