The complete set of elements being considered in a question, often shown by a rectangle in a Venn diagram.

Revise: Enumerating SetsThe rectangle is the universal set: everything being considered. Circles inside it represent sets. An element shared by two sets goes in their overlap; one in neither set remains inside the rectangle but outside both circles.

In a Venn diagram, put shared elements in the overlap first. Check for elements that belong outside both circles but inside the universal set.
Do not confuse with the region outside every circle. means everything in the universal set that is not in , including any part of another set outside .

Every element of the universal set should appear exactly once in the completed diagram. An element in the overlap is already in both sets: it must not also be copied into either non-overlapping part.
