An index written as a fraction, such as or ; for positive bases it combines a root and a power.
For a fractional index, use the denominator as the root and the numerator as the power. Simplifying the root first often keeps the arithmetic manageable.
On Higher-tier questions with a negative fractional index, deal with the negative sign by taking the reciprocal, then apply the root and power.
For a fractional index on the Higher tier, use the denominator to choose the root and the numerator to choose the power.
