Factorising

Definition

Rewriting an expression as a product of factors which multiply to give the original expression.

For AQA, solving by factorising and finding approximate solutions from a graph are additional Foundation content. Higher-tier work also includes equations that first require rearrangement, completing the square and the quadratic formula.

Rearrange the equation so that one side is zero before factorising or identifying $a$ , $b$ and $c$ .

After factorising, set each factor equal to zero; do not stop at the factorised equation.
