Revise: The Versailles SettlementArticle 231, commonly called the war guilt clause, required Germany to accept responsibility for wartime loss and damage. At GCSE, this is often summarised as Germany having to accept the blame for the war. It was a treaty requirement, not an impartial historical investigation into every cause of the conflict.
