Revise: Colonisation of VirginiaThe English called the region Virginia, honouring Elizabeth as the ‘Virgin Queen’. This did not mean the land was uninhabited: Indigenous communities already lived there, with their own leaders and settlements. Roanoke Island was selected as the site of the first English colony, established in 1585 and abandoned in 1586.
