Virgin Lands campaign

The most ambitious initiative was the Virgin Lands campaign of the mid-1950s. Vast areas in northern Kazakhstan and neighbouring parts of Russia were brought into cultivation. Its attraction was straightforward: farming more land could quickly increase the harvest without waiting for existing farms to become much more productive.
