Revise: Medieval Revolt and AuthorityOn 14 June, Richard met rebels at Mile End. He agreed to pardon those involved and grant freedom from villeinage, asking them to return home peacefully. These were substantial promises: the rebels appeared to have forced the king to recognise demands that threatened landlords’ authority.
Judge impact over different timescales. Immediate defeat does not mean no lasting significance, but the revolt alone did not end villeinage.
