Revise: Medical ProgressTrepanning involved making a hole in the skull. It was used for problems such as headaches and epilepsy, and could be linked to beliefs about releasing harmful spirits. Healed holes in surviving skulls show that some patients lived after the procedure; this does not establish that the original illness was cured.
