Trained bands

One source of soldiers was the trained bands: local militia whose members normally followed civilian occupations but practised military skills for a few days each year. Their training included the use of pikes and muskets. They were not the same as full-time professional soldiers, and local forces could be reluctant to serve far from home for long periods.
