Paper 3
Revise: AlliancesThe Totonacs around Cempoala, near the Gulf coast, were subject to the Aztec Empire. Their chief complained to Cortés that Mexica tribute collectors had stripped the country of its resources. He also complained that young Totonacs had been taken to Tenochtitlan for sacrifice.
Distinguish the Totonacs, who were Aztec subjects, from the Tlaxcalans, who remained independent enemies of the Mexica.
Explain the link between a grievance and an alliance: heavy tribute encouraged Totonac leaders to seek Spanish help against Aztec rule.
