Thrall

The poem Rígsthula presents these divisions through three figures: Thrall, associated with slaves; Karl, associated with farmers; and Jarl, associated with magnates. Their homes, clothing and food are described differently to emphasise their unequal standing. The poem is a story expressing ideas about social hierarchy, not a factual explanation of the origin of these groups.
