Revise: Injuries, Illnesses and Gas AttacksExploding artillery shells could tear away limbs and scatter shrapnel: small metal pieces or balls that struck soldiers at speed. Fragments could become embedded in the body, damaging tissue and bones. Soldiers exposed in no-man’s-land were especially vulnerable because they lacked the protection of trench cover.
