Revise: Nature of Law Enforcement and PunishmentChurch courts continued from the medieval period, initially trying clergy and people who claimed benefit of clergy. This allowed an accused person to be tried in a Church court, where punishments were generally more lenient than in secular courts. Secular courts were run by non-religious authorities.
