A political order in which citizens share rights rather than being subject to a single tyrant; it does not necessarily mean that all inhabitants have equal rights or that the state is democratic.

Revise: The Spartan Reaction and Corinthian Opposition to TyrannySocles attacked the proposal as a reversal of the proper political order. His dramatic image of heaven and earth exchanging places suggested that replacing the ‘rule of equals’ with tyranny was profoundly wrong.
Do not equate Socles’ defence of the ‘rule of equals’ with support for Athenian democracy. His argument was against tyranny.
