Paper 2
Reforms imposed on Henry III in 1258 which required government through a baronial council and regular parliamentary consultation.
Revise: Magna Carta and the Rise of ParliamentIn 1258, the barons forced Henry to accept the Provisions of Oxford. These required government with the advice of a fifteen-member council of barons and regular parliamentary meetings, three times a year. This challenged more than an individual royal decision: it attempted to place continuing restraints on how the king governed.
Distinguish the Provisions of Oxford in 1258, the victory at Lewes in 1264, the Parliament of 1265 and the royalist victory at Evesham later that year.
