A person appointed to exercise governing authority when the monarch could not rule personally, for example because of illness or youth.
Revise: Deposition and the Wars of the RosesRichard, Duke of York, became Protector in 1454, exercising governing authority during the king’s incapacity. When Henry recovered, York lost that position. York and his Neville allies feared exclusion and their opponents’ influence at court.
