Revise: Viking (Rus) in RussiaThe Primary Chronicle records Rus demands for tribute from Slavs and Finns by 859. Rus based at Kiev collected tribute that included furs and enslaved people, which could then be traded. Enslaved people were treated as commodities within this system, making coercion and violence part of its operation.
Treat the Primary Chronicle’s invitation to Rurik as an account written much later, not an unquestionable contemporary record.
