Piracy

Over time, increasing trade and action against piracy encouraged a shift towards settlements and regular commerce. Plunder and colonisation were not completely separate stages: both helped England challenge its rivals and gain wealth overseas.

Piracy meant robbery at sea. Merchant ships carrying valuable cargoes offered targets. When pirates seized a vessel, merchants could lose both their goods and the means of transporting them.
