Pharmaceutical industry

Penicillin did not create the pharmaceutical industry from nothing: chemical medicines already existed. However, its mass production helped expand the industry and demonstrated the value of combining research, investment and factory production. Pharmaceutical companies became increasingly important in developing and supplying modern medicines.
