Revise: Social Changes and the One Child PolicyIn 1979, China introduced the One Child policy, seeking to limit most couples to one child. Deng and his allies believed that rapid population growth would absorb resources needed for modernisation. More people meant greater demands for housing, schools, health care, land and water.
Keep the period 1976–1981 in view. Later population ageing and the eventual ending of the One Child policy are not evidence of its impact by 1981.
Do not describe the One Child policy as identical for every family everywhere; implementation and exceptions varied.
