Definition

The ruling family established in India by Babur in 1526, whose emperors gradually expanded Mughal power.

Babur occupied Delhi and Agra, ending Lodi rule and establishing the Mughal dynasty in India. This is why 1526 marks the beginning of the Mughal Empire. It does not mean that Babur already controlled all India, or that his new position was secure.
