A defensive ditch around a fortification, which could be dry or filled with water.

Revise: Establishing ControlA moat, or defensive ditch, made it harder to reach the palisade. It could be dry or water-filled. Access across it could be controlled by a drawbridge, which defenders could raise during an attack.
Do not confuse the motte, an earth mound, with the moat, a defensive ditch.
