A lake or pool. At Kenilworth, the Great Mere was a large artificial lake used for defence and later also for ornament and recreation.
Revise: Location of Kenilworth CastleDe Clinton retained the southern part of the grant for a castle, park and mere. He used the northern part for an Augustinian priory, founded in about 1124. The priory’s canons could fish in the mere and graze livestock in the park.
