Revise: Tensions with Sparta and the Causes of ConflictAround 432 BC, Pericles proposed the Megarian Decree and the Athenian Assembly accepted it. It excluded Megarian merchants from Athens’ market and the ports of the Athenian Empire. This was an economic sanction: Athens used control over access to trade to punish another state rather than attacking it directly.
