Revise: Patronage of buildingShah Jahan’s most famous architectural commission was the Taj Mahal at Agra, built as a memorial to his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. She died in 1631, while giving birth to their fourteenth child. His grief inspired the commission of a mausoleum: a monumental building containing a tomb.
Distinguish construction dates: the Taj Mahal’s principal mausoleum was completed in 1648, but its surrounding buildings and gardens were finished in 1653.
