The eastern Mediterranean region, through which Asian goods reached European buyers.

The Turkey Company, established in 1581, gave its merchants a monopoly over English trade with the eastern Mediterranean. This helped organise English access to Asian goods through the Levant. However, buying goods in Mediterranean ports was different from reaching their suppliers in Asia.
