A large unit of the Roman army made up principally of heavily armed citizen infantry.
Revise: The Initial Invasion and Claudius’ RoleThe force probably contained four legions, with about 20,000 heavily armed infantry, and roughly as many auxiliary troops, including cavalry. The total was therefore approximately 40,000 soldiers, rather than an exact surviving count. The combination gave Plautius both the strength needed for major battles and troops suited to more mobile or specialist tasks.
