Paper 1
A relatively prosperous Russian peasant farmer.
Paper 3
Originally a relatively wealthy peasant. Under Stalin, the label was also applied to peasants who resisted collectivisation, making them targets for persecution.
Revise: Agriculture and CollectivisationStalin presented kulaks, supposedly wealthy peasants who had benefited from the NEP, as enemies of the policy. However, the label was also applied to people who refused to join collective farms. It became a means of identifying and punishing opposition, not simply a precise description of wealth.
Do not describe all opponents as wealthy kulaks: poorer peasants also resisted, and the label ‘kulak’ was extended to opponents.
