Revise: Religious pietyIn 1669, he ended jharokha darshan, the emperor’s appearance before his subjects at a balcony. This had allowed people to see their ruler and pay their respects, but it also carried associations with receiving a deity’s blessing in Hindu worship. Ending it expressed Aurangzeb’s religious objections while removing an established way in which the emperor maintained a visible connection with his subjects.
