Isthmus

Panama lies on a narrow isthmus, separating the Caribbean from the Pacific. Balboa had crossed this region and reached the Pacific in 1513. A permanent settlement on its Pacific side gave Spain a base from which to organise further exploration and conquest along that ocean’s coastline.
