Islamist extremist

Al-Qaeda was an Islamist extremist organisation. Islamist extremists believe that a strict interpretation of Islamic religious law should govern political and social life, and that violence is acceptable to achieve this. These beliefs should not be treated as representing Muslims generally: many Muslims reject them.
