A movement founded by Mangosuthu Buthelezi in 1975, drawing strongly on Zulu nationalism and his position in KwaZulu. It became the Inkatha Freedom Party in 1990.

Revise: The Path to Democracy and the 1994 ElectionMangosuthu Buthelezi founded the Inkatha Cultural Liberation Movement in 1975. He was a former ANC member and the leader of KwaZulu, a homeland created under apartheid. Inkatha drew on Zulu nationalism, traditional leaders and Buthelezi’s position within the homeland administration.
Do not treat Black opposition to apartheid as a single united movement. Explain the political differences between Inkatha and the ANC, rather than presenting the violence simply as an ethnic conflict.
