Revise: Hundred Flowers CampaignThe Hundred Flowers campaign, 1956–57, took place while Mao Zedong and the Chinese Communist Party were establishing communist rule. The Party controlled political life, but this did not mean that everyone agreed with how its officials governed. In 1956, Mao began encouraging open discussion of the Party’s performance and policies: a striking change after years of suppressing opposition.
