Free at the point of use

Its central principle was healthcare for everyone, free at the point of use and funded collectively, principally through taxation. Treatment was to depend on medical need rather than a patient’s ability to pay.

Care was intended to be free at the point of use. This meant patients did not normally pay a bill when they received treatment; it did not mean that healthcare cost nothing. The NHS was paid for through public funding, principally general taxation.
