The painful practice of tightly binding girls’ feet during childhood to restrict their growth, causing lasting deformity and limiting mobility.

Revise: Family and WomenFoot binding was a particularly visible expression of women’s subordinate position. Girls’ feet were tightly bound while they were still growing, deforming them to produce the small feet regarded as desirable. It caused severe pain and lasting disabilities, restricting women’s ability to walk and work.
Do not claim that Mao first banned foot binding: earlier governments had already prohibited it. Communist campaigns helped suppress its continued practice.
