Revise: The MormonsIn spring 1857, President James Buchanan declared Utah to be in rebellion. That summer, he sent an army west to assert federal authority. Mormons feared that the troops would bring renewed persecution: earlier violence against their communities made the approaching army seem threatening.
For the aftermath, explain both the assertion of federal authority in 1858 and the much slower prosecution of John D. Lee.
