Revise: Change overviewIn 2004, countries including Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic joined the EU. Migration to Britain from these countries increased as people sought jobs and better living standards. Migrants worked in sectors including agriculture, construction and services, helping employers meet demand for labour.
Link each event to its impact: for example, explain how Poland’s EU membership in 2004 changed opportunities to work in Britain.
Distinguish the end of communist rule in Poland in 1989 from Poland joining the EU in 2004. Easier departure did not immediately mean unrestricted entry into Britain.
Keep the EEC and EU distinct: Britain joined the EEC in 1973; later EU enlargement helped increase migration from Eastern Europe.
