Dominion

The War of Independence began in 1919. It ended with the Anglo-Irish Treaty of December 1921, which provided for a twenty-six-county Irish Free State, established in 1922 as a self-governing dominion within the British Empire. Northern Ireland, consisting of six counties with a unionist majority, had been established in May 1921 with its own devolved government and remained part of the UK.
