Revise: Expansion in IndiaUnder the Doctrine of Lapse, the Company could annex a state when its ruler died without an heir it recognised. It also used allegations of poor government to justify expansion: Awadh was annexed in 1856 on these grounds. Removing rulers threatened their authority and the position of people who depended on their courts.
