Revise: Distribution and designTo understand their distribution, ask where castles were concentrated and what those places had in common. They were not scattered randomly. Important routes, towns, crossings and unsettled areas were particularly valuable locations.
For distribution, identify a pattern and support it with named places: for example, castles in centres of unrest such as Exeter, York and Nottingham.
