A buffer area from which opposing military forces are withdrawn. In Korea, the armistice required withdrawal by 2 km on each side of the military demarcation line.

Revise: End of the Korean WarEach side was required to withdraw 2 km from this line, creating a demilitarised zone approximately 4 km wide. This buffer was intended to separate the opposing forces and reduce the risk of incidents restarting the war.
Describe the final dividing line as near the 38th Parallel, not identical to it. The DMZ extended 2 km on each side of the military demarcation line.
