Dardanelles

The Allies wanted to force a passage through the Dardanelles, reach the Ottoman capital, Constantinople, and knock the Ottoman Empire out of the war. Control of this route would also allow supplies to reach Russia through the Black Sea. A successful campaign might draw enemy resources away from other fronts and encourage Balkan countries to support the Allies.
