Danse Macabre

One expression of this wider European response was Danse Macabre, or ‘Dance of Death’, imagery. Its focus on human mortality shows how death became a shared cultural concern. Such imagery helps us understand survivors’ fears and memories; an improvement in wages could not erase the experience of losing family and neighbours.
