Revise: The British Nationality Act 1948 and Commonwealth MigrationThe British Nationality Act 1948, effective from 1 January 1949, introduced citizenship of the United Kingdom and Colonies, usually shortened to CUKC. Citizens of independent Commonwealth countries held their own national citizenships, but they and CUKCs continued to share the status of British subject. Under this scheme, “British subject” and “Commonwealth citizen” meant the same thing.
