An ordinary free person in Anglo-Saxon society, often a peasant farmer. Ceorls could still owe rent or work to a lord.

Revise: SocietyBelow the aristocracy were ordinary free people, including ceorls, many of whom were farmers. Being free did not mean having no obligations. A farmer might owe rent, produce or labour to a lord in return for access to land.
Do not treat all peasants as enslaved. A ceorl was free, although freedom did not mean freedom from obligations to a lord.
