Revise: Revolt of the EarlsThe underlying issue was centralisation: William wanted authority to remain concentrated in his own hands. An earl might hold an important title without being free to govern entirely as he wished. Restrictions on land and power could therefore anger William’s own supporters as well as Anglo-Saxon nobles.
