Bishop

The Witan was a council of leading nobles and churchmen, including earls, bishops and archbishops. It advised the king about matters such as foreign threats, religious questions and disputes over land.

Below the archbishops, bishops administered areas called dioceses. They supervised clergy, maintained discipline and managed Church land. Dioceses contained local parishes, where priests served their communities.
