Basic Law

West Germany’s Basic Law of 1949 established a democratic, federal state: power was shared between the national government and regional states. Voters could choose between competing parties, and the government depended on parliamentary support. Konrad Adenauer became Chancellor in 1949 and remained in office until 1963.
